Opinions on Regulating Online Live Rewards and Strengthening the Protection of Minors adopted

On 7 May 2022, the Cyberspace Administration of China's (CAC) and the National Radio and Television Administration issued the Opinions on Regulating Online Live Rewards and Strengthening the Protection of Minors. The Opinions focus on live streaming broadcasts with "reward" functions, which allow viewers to gift rewards, often in the form of money, to streamers. The Opinions require for minors to be prohibited from using "reward" functions, and that rewards in general play a less prominent function on streaming websites. For instance, the ranking of streamers by the amount of rewards received is prohibited. Further, they call on streaming websites to implement "Youth Mode" functions to facilitate implementing content and viewing restrictions. Finally, minors under the age of 16 are prohibited from hosting live streams.
