Initiated Federal Court Proceedings against Uber regarding misleading cancellation fee message

On 26 April 2022, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) and Uber B.V. announced that it initiated Federal Court Proceedings have against Uber B.V. The lawsuit concerns misleading warning messages by Uber to its customers regarding ride cancellations. Specifically, Uber provides a five-minute window of free cancellation after ordering a ride. However, between December 2017 and September 2021 Uber sent misleading messages to users within those free five minutes stating that they would be charged a cancellation fee. Uber admitted to the misleading conduct and has agreed, in cooperation with the ACCC, to make joint submissions to the Court for USD 26 million in fines.
