Description

Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules including registration requirements entered into force

On 1 May 2026, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming rules, including registration requirements, entered into force. The rules provide that registration is required where the Central Government notifies a specific game or category as requiring registration, or where the game is intended to be offered as an e-sport. Online game service providers are required to apply digitally to the Online Gaming Authority of India in the form published on its website or mobile application, providing details including identity and contact information, the description and category of the game, the targeted user age group, the revenue model, user safety features, and the internal grievance redressal mechanism. The Authority processes the application by first determining whether the game is an online money game, a social game, or an e-sport. It also provides that successful applicants receive a digital certificate of registration with a unique registration number, valid for a period of up to ten years, as specified by the provider in its application.
