Description

Vietnam initiated negotiations for accession to expanded Information Technology Agreement

On 15 April 2026, Vietnam initiated negotiations to accede to the expanded Information Technology Agreement at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), following the submission of an official diplomatic note to the WTO Director-General. The agreement, which covers 201 information technology product categories, including computers, telecommunications equipment, and semiconductors, obliges participating members to eliminate tariffs on covered goods on a most-favoured-nation basis. Accession would extend these obligations to Vietnam's electronics and technology manufacturing sector, with anticipated benefits including reduced technology costs and increased foreign investment. Vietnam is required to submit a draft schedule of tariff commitments and negotiate with existing participants, with formal membership contingent on consensus approval.
