On 19 February 2026, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Bill, including design requirements was introduced to the Senate. The Act seeks to establish a framework for the regulation and governance of AI, applying to providers, deployers, and users of AI systems. The Act aims to ensure ethical, transparent, and accountable AI use, foster innovation, safeguard human rights and data protection and promote AI literacy, and align with international standards. The Act requires providers and deployers to disclose the nature, purpose, and limitations of AI systems, the extent of automated decision-making and human involvement, and measures taken to identify and mitigate bias and ensure fairness. It further mandates that users ensure safeguards under data protection law where automated decisions have significant effects, including rights to human intervention, to express views, and to contest decisions. Providers of high-risk AI systems must submit annual compliance reports to the Artificial Intelligence Commissioner, with non-confidential information made public.
