Nigeria: Data Protection Commission opened consultation on inquiry into protection of children on digital platforms

On 10 March 2026, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy opened a public consultation on proposed regulations to strengthen the protection of children on social media and other digital platforms, aligned with Section 31 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023. The proposals would apply to social media platforms and digital service providers operating in Nigeria, and consider measures including minimum age restrictions, stronger age verification systems, and enhanced platform accountability. The consultation seeks public input on risks including harmful content, cyberbullying, online grooming, misuse of children's personal data, and artificial intelligence-related harms.
