United States and Ecuador signed Agreement on Reciprocal Trade including cross-border data transfer regulation

On 13 March 2026, the United States and Ecuador signed an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade. Section 3 of the agreement covers digital trade and technology. Under the agreement, Ecuador committed to ensuring the transfer of data across trusted borders, including by endeavouring to recognise the US as providing adequate data protection for data transfer purposes by 31 December 2026 and recognising data transfer mechanisms such as the Global Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System and Global Privacy Recognition for Processors (PRP) System.
