El Salvador and United States adopted Agreement on Reciprocal Trade including cross-border data transfer regulation

On 29 January 2026, El Salvador and the United States signed an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade. The Agreement requires El Salvador to ensure the free transfer of data across trusted borders for business purposes and to recognise the United States as having an adequate data protection standard for data transfer purposes. Furthermore, El Salvador agrees to recognise the Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System and Global Privacy Recognition for Processors (PRP) System certifications as valid mechanisms for international data transfers under its domestic law.
