Brazil Federal Supreme Court orders suspension of Telegram

On 17 March 2022, the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil ordered the suspension of Telegram operations within the country, due to the company’s failure to comply with Brazil’s national legislation and court orders. According to the court order, Telegram failed to comply with a previous order regarding the suspension of Allan dos Santos's account based on a petition from the Federal Police (9935) and did not respond to the invitation made by the Superior Electoral Court to address the spread of misinformation. The judge ordered Telegram to present its plan to combat disinformation and comply with the order to suspend the account of Allan dos Santos. Finally, the judge increased the fine for failing to comply with the court orders to BRL 500’000.
