United States of America: Senate requested information from NVIDIA on agreement with Groq over potential competition concerns pertaining to AI semiconductor sector

Description

Senate requested information from NVIDIA on agreement with Groq over potential competition concerns pertaining to AI semiconductor sector

On 19 March 2026, United States Senators sent a letter to NVIDIA Corporation Chief Executive Officer requesting information on NVIDIA's December 2025 agreement with Groq, an AI chip company, over concerns about competition in the AI semiconductor sector. On 24 December 2025, NVIDIA and Groq announced an agreement under which NVIDIA paid USD 20 billion to acquire a non-exclusive licence for Groq's inference chip design technology and hired key Groq employees, including its chief executive officer and president. The Senators expressed concern that the agreement, by transferring substantially all of Groq's assets without formally acquiring the company, may be structured to avoid antitrust review. The Senators further expressed concern that the deal may strengthen NVIDIA's existing position in the high-end data centre graphics processing unit (GPU) market, where NVIDIA holds approximately 90% market share, and reduce competitive pressure in the inference chip sector. The Senators requested that NVIDIA provide detailed information on the structure of the agreement, assets transferred, and workforce changes by 3 April 2026.
