On 9 March 2026, the District Court of California granted a preliminary injunction against Perplexity AI, restricting its Artificial Intelligence (AI) agentic tools from accessing Amazon’s password-protected systems and requiring the destruction of any Amazon data, including customer information, obtained through such access. The order found that Perplexity likely violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and other relevant laws in California by accessing user accounts without authorisation and transmitting data to its servers, causing irreparable harm to Amazon. The court further held that the balance of hardships and public interest favours protecting systems from unauthorised access, and imposed obligations, including a ban on account use for AI access and certification of compliance.
