Malaysia: Communications and Multimedia Commission announced investigation into alleged religiously offensive content on Threads and Facebook

On 11 March 2026, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced an investigation into the dissemination of videos on social media platforms, including Threads and Facebook, that allegedly insult the religion of Islam. The investigation follows reports of content showing an individual stomping on the Quran, which the regulator stated threatens national harmony and incites religious tension. It was stated that the MCMC is collaborating with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and Meta Platforms to identify the account owner involved, despite the relevant profile being deleted. It was stated that MCMC has preserved the materials as evidence and cautioned that action may be taken under existing content moderation laws for resharing such content or inciting racial and religious tension.
