Republic of Korea: Government announced measures to address government response to fake news and the misuse of artificial intelligence pertaining to elections

On 26 February 2026, the government of South Korea announced measures following an inter-ministerial meeting to strengthen the government's response to fake news and the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly ahead of the June 2026 local elections. The measures apply to online information activities, including the creation and dissemination of AI-generated content and false information on digital platforms. The government announced a coordinated response involving several ministries and agencies. It was stated that the Broadcasting, Media and Communications Commission will act as the central coordinating body and support fact-checking through an Information and Communication Service Transparency Centre. It was also stated that enforcement will be strengthened through specialised prosecutors, police investigations, nationwide inspections of illegal election advertisements, and investigation units focusing on AI-based misinformation. Authorities will also support technologies to detect deepfakes and expand media literacy programmes and digital media education.
