On 13 May 2021, the Children and Teens' Online Privacy Protection Act was introduced in the US Senate. This bill grants minors (aged 12–16) the same data protection rights that previously were applied to children (ages 0–12). In addition, it introduces privacy protections for both children and minors by introducing conditions for the data collection by website, online service and mobile application operators targeting children. Furthermore, the bill prohibits targeted marketing to children and minors without consent, introduces the right to data correction and deletion for parents and minors and requires special cybersecurity and data collection transparency for connected tools targeting children and minors.
