On 29 April 2021, the Mind Your Own Business Act (S. 1444) was introduced in the US Senate. The law mandates the development of an opt-out process for designated commercial entities that operate high-risk information systems such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. Systems are classified as high risk if they handle large amounts of personal information, cause privacy concerns or monitor large public places. In addition, systems may be classified as high risk if they contribute to inaccuracy, bias, or discrimination or facilitate decision-making on sensitive consumer information by evaluating their behavior. High risk systems would be required to provide opt-out options for consumers and to be assessed regarding both the danger of revealing personal information and the level of appropriate safeguards. In addition, the Federal Trade Commission would be instructed to build an online site where consumers may opt out of data sharing and check their data sharing status.
