On 25 February 2026, the European Commission proposed a Directive to combat firearms trafficking and other firearms-related offences within the European Union. The proposal introduces a harmonised legal framework to address security threats arising from technological developments, specifically addressing the dissemination of blueprints for the 3D printing of firearms, which may occur online. Under the proposed rules, the illicit creation, acquisition, possession, and dissemination of such digital blueprints will be categorised as a criminal offence across all Member States. The Directive would mandate that Member States implement a maximum sentence of at least 2 years' imprisonment for the creation and dissemination of 3D blueprints. It would also require Member States to establish National Firearms Focal Points to enhance cross-border operational cooperation and data collection. These focal points will facilitate the tracing of weapons and the standardisation of seized firearm data, including information on models and types. The proposal would also require Member States to share statistical data on investigations, prosecutions, and convictions every 5 years, aiming to improve EU awareness of firearms-related crimes. The proposal is intended to target intentional acts while preserving the legal activities of authorised dealers and industry participants.
