Description

Crime and Policing Bill was passed by House of Commons

On 17 June 2025, the House of Commons passed the Crime and Policing Bill to strengthen laws on child sexual abuse, including content generated using artificial intelligence (AI). The Bill applies to individuals, online service providers, and persons in specified roles in England. It creates an offence relating to the generation of child sexual abuse images by criminalising the creation, adaptation, possession, supply or offer of such generators, as set out in the newly inserted section 46A of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. The Bill introduces a mandatory duty for adults in relevant roles to report child sexual abuse to the authorities. It also establishes a civil penalty regime for online services in relation to unlawful weapons content. This includes content removal notices that must be complied with within 48 hours, with civil penalties imposed in cases of non-compliance. The Bill proceeded to the House of Lords for further consideration.
