Description

Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media inquiry into Meta over deepfake content and fake news on Facebook hearing was held

On 11 February 2026, the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media held a hearing as part of its oversight inquiry into Meta Platforms, regarding the handling on Facebook of a deepfake post targeting the President, as well as other allegedly false content. The hearing referred to an alleged delay in removing the deepfake post, which it stated had been circulating since 2 February 2026. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) indicated that Meta removed the post promptly after it was reported by the DICT. Meta stated that the deepfake content had already been taken down on Facebook and that all links and URLs containing the content were deleted immediately upon notification. Meta also noted that the material may have been reposted from another account. In relation to a separate post allegedly falsely attributed to a senator, Meta stated that content should be reported through its standard reporting mechanisms. The senator indicated that the content had been reported multiple times, requested its removal, and stated that TikTok had removed comparable content.
