On 14 February 2022, the Review Board of the US Copyright Office rejected a request to review its denial to register a two-dimensional artwork, generated by an artificial intelligence (AI) system, called "A Recent Entrance to Paradise". The Board confirms the Registration Program's refusal of registration with referral to previous jurisdiction jurisprudence, according to which it will not register works “produced by a machine or mere mechanical process” that operates “without any creative input or intervention from a human author”. The Office thus confirms that in order for copyright protection, “a work must be created by a human being”.
