Description

European Union and India concluded negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement including copyright protection regulation

On 27 January 2026, the European Union (EU) and India concluded negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The agreement includes a dedicated chapter on intellectual property (IP), with the aim of promoting effective protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, including copyright, trademarks, designs, and trade secrets. It reaffirms commitments under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS Agreement) and other international IP treaties. It sets standards on the availability, scope, duration and limitations of rights, establishes civil, administrative and border enforcement measures, and provides for cooperation, stakeholder initiatives and the creation of a Committee on Intellectual Property Rights to oversee implementation. The agreement will proceed to signature and conclusion following the completion of internal approval procedures by both parties.
