Description

European Union and India concluded negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement including copyright protection regulation

On 27 January 2026, the European Union (EU) and India concluded negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The agreement includes a dedicated chapter on intellectual property, with the aim of promoting effective protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, such as copyright, trademarks, designs, and trade secrets. To this end, the FTA prescribes measures, procedures and remedies, which each party must provide. Furthermore, it specifies relevant international agreements on IP that both parties are required to comply with. The full draft texts are due to be published shortly. The FTA will proceed to signature once the Council adopts a proposal for signing and concluding the agreement.
