Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs announced investigation into Meta over alleged Instagram user data leak

On 14 January 2026, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) held a clarification meeting with Meta regarding an investigation into alleged user data leaks and password reset security on the Instagram platform. In the meeting, Meta claimed the internal password reset mechanism does not permit access external parties to access account passwords. Meta further indicated that investigations are currently being conducted to verify reports of data leaks linked to a third-party report. The ministry initiated this action under Government Regulation Number 71 of 2019 on the Implementation of Electronic Systems and Transactions, which empowers the authority to oversee Electronic System Organisers (PSE). Komdigi stated that while no evidence of misuse had been identified to date, the ongoing investigation results will determine subsequent evaluations. The ministry advised the public to maintain digital account security while monitoring continues.
