Description

eSafety Commissioner issued notice raising concerns over use of Grok in X over alleged risks of sexualised and exploitative content

On 9 January 2026, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner issued a notice raising concerns over the use of the generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) system Grok on platform X, citing risks of generating sexualised or exploitative content, particularly involving children. The Commissioner stated that, though the number of reports still remained small, there had recently been a rise in reports alleging the generation of sexualised or exploitative imagery relating to the use of Grok. The Commissioner also stated that it had request further information from X on the safeguards in place to prevent misuse of Grok and to ensure compliance with systemic online safety obligations. The notice highlighted that social media platforms and generative AI services are subject to the Online Safety Act, including X and Grok. The notice stated that the Commissioner may use its enforcement powers, including removal notices, where appropriate.
