Description

Introduced Senate Bill 957 relating to consumer data protection

On 9 February 2022, Senate Bill 957 was introduced by the Senate of the Wisconsin State, as a companion bill to AB 957. The Bill establishes standards for controllers and processors of consumer personal data. The bill defines a "controller" as a person who, alone or in collaboration with others, determines the purpose and means of processing personal data. It applies to controllers who control or process the personal data of at least 100,000 consumers or who control or process the personal data of at least 25,000 consumers and derive more than half of their gross revenue from the sale of personal data. Violations of the bill's obligations are enforced only by the attorney general. A controller or processor that breaches the bill's standards faces a penalty of up to USD $7,500 per infraction, with the attorney general being entitled to recover reasonable investigation and litigation costs.
