Description

Government announced investigation into X over Grok-generated sexist and sexual content

On 2 January 2026, the French Government announced an investigation concerning content generated by the generative artificial intelligence service Grok and disseminated on the platform X. The Government reported manifestly unlawful content to the public prosecutor and to the Pharos platform pursuant to Article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in order to obtain immediate removal. The press release states that, in recent days, Grok enabled the generation and dissemination of sexist and sexual content, including false videos known as deepfakes, targeting individuals without their consent. The Government also referred the matter to Arcom in relation to possible failures by X to comply with obligations arising from the Digital Services Act, in particular obligations concerning the prevention and mitigation of risks linked to the dissemination of illegal content.
