On 1 March 2022, the Council of the European Union adopted an amendment to Regulation 833/2014 concerning restrictive measures in view of Russia's actions in Ukraine. The amendment introduces the prohibition for broadcast operators to enable the transmission of any content by Sputnik and Russia Today (RT), including the local versions RT-English, RT-UK, RT-Germany, RT-France, and RT-Spanish. The prohibition involves any transmission or distribution by cable, satellite, IP-TV, internet and video-sharing platforms or applications. Furthermore, search engine providers must remove content by Sputnik and RT and social media providers must delete posts reproducing content by Sputnik and RT.
