Australia: Reddit filed lawsuit challenging validity of Social Media Minimum Age Act

On 12 December 2025, social media company Reddit filed a lawsuit with the High Court of Australia challenging the validity of the Social Media Minimum Age Act, which requires providers of age-restricted social media platforms to prevent children under 16 from creating a user account. Reddit argues that the Act is invalid because it places an unjustified burden on political communication. Additionally, if the Act is found to be valid, Reddit seeks an injunction preventing the Minister for Communications from designating Reddit as an age-restricted social media platform.
