Description

House Energy and Commerce Committee announced Reducing Exploitative Social Media Exposure for Teens (RESET) Act

On 25 November 2025, the Chairmen of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade announced that they would consider the Reducing Exploitative Social Media Exposure for Teens (RESET) Act as part of a hearing on legislative solutions for protecting children and teenagers online. The Act would apply to user-generated content platforms for minors, defined as individuals under the age of 16. The Act would prohibit covered platforms from allowing individuals whom they know are minors from opening or maintaining user accounts. Further, upon enactment, platforms would have to identify users who are minors, notify those users of the impending termination of their accounts, and, finally, terminate affected accounts within 30 days of notification. Further, platforms would be required to delete all personal data collected from or submitted by minors, while providing minors with access to this data or content upon request. The Act has not been introduced to Congress yet.
