On 25 November 2025, the Safe Social Media Act (HB 6290) was introduced to the House of Representatives. The Act directs the Federal Trade Commission and the Secretary of Health and Human Services to study teenagers’ use of social media. The Act applies to social media platforms, excluding broadband providers and email. The Act requires a study on personal data collection, algorithmic use of personal information by social media platforms, targeted advertising, and usage patterns of social media. The study is also required to include differences in social media use by age, mental health impacts, and risks and benefits of extended use. The Act requires a report to be presented with policy recommendations to Congress within three years.
