Description

Minister of Communications announced application of Social Media Minimum Age Act to Twitch

On 21 November 2025, the eSafety Commissioner announced that the Social Media Minimum Age Act would be applicable to Twitch from 10 December 2025. Twitch will be subject to these obligations alongside other platforms previously notified by the Commissioner, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, X, Threads, Reddit, and Kick. These services were assessed by the eSafety Commissioner as age-restricted social media platforms because their sole or significant purpose is to enable online social interaction. The platforms have to implement age-verification systems and user access restriction measures to prevent persons under 16 from creating or holding accounts. The social media Minimum Age Bill imposes financial penalties of up to AUD 49.5 million if regulated services fail to take reasonable steps to prevent under-16 access. The Commissioner also stated that it did not currently consider Pinterest to meet the criteria to be considered an age-restricted social media platform.
