European Union: European Commission closes consultation in call for evidence for evaluation and review of Audiovisual and Media Services Directive

Description

European Commission closes consultation in call for evidence for evaluation and review of Audiovisual and Media Services Directive

On 21 December 2025, the European Commission closes a consultation as part of a call for evidence for evaluating and reviewing the Audiovisual and Media Services Directive. The call for evidence is part of a process of assessing whether the framework established by the Directive remains effective, or whether it requires updating, in particular in relation to ensuring the visibility of European media, a level playing field between traditional and new digital players, and adequate protections for online viewers. The Commission set out a number of market changes since the last update of the Directive, such as the prominence of a new market player category (influencers), new distribution technologies, and new ways of accessing online content. Based on its own assessment and the feedback received, the Commission may consider a range of regulatory options, including targeted interventions and a new Directive.
