Description

Communications and Media Authority rejected Telecommunications Consumer Protections Code

On 24 October 2025, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) rejected the Australian Telecommunications Association’s revised Telecommunications Consumer Protections Code (TCP Code) after determining that it failed to meet legislative standards under the Telecommunications Act 1997. The Code, which governs consumer protections for residential and small business telecommunication users, was deemed inadequate in areas including responsible selling, credit assessments, disconnection, and mobile coverage transparency. The ACMA issued a notice to rectify deficiencies in the existing 2019 Code within 30 days, stating that if a satisfactory revision is not provided, it may impose a mandatory industry standard to strengthen consumer safeguards.
