Introduction of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill including content moderation requirement

On 25 January 2022, the Online Safety and Media Regulation was introduced to the Irish Parliament (Seanad Éireann). The Bill would transpose the Audiovisual Media Services Directive into Irish law. In particular, the Bill would introduce content moderation for online platforms. In particular, the Bill would empower the Media Commission to adopt Online Safety Codes that the platforms will be obliged to follow. Furthermore, the online platform providers will be required to remove or disable access to content classified as harmful upon request.
