On 24 October 2025, the obligation under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) circular requiring all payment terminals to be geo-tagged and equipped with native geolocation capabilities using dual-frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers entered into force. These terminals must be registered with a Payment Terminal Service Aggregator (PTSA) and provide precise latitude and longitude coordinates matching the registered business location. All devices are required to integrate the National Central Switch (NCS) Software Development Kit (SDK) for geolocation monitoring and geofencing within point-of-sale applications and operate on Android Operating System (OS) version 10 or higher. Geo-location data must be captured for each transaction and transmitted as a mandatory reporting field. Devices not routed through a PTSA or found non-compliant are barred from processing transactions. Compliance validation commenced on 20 October 2025, with the final compliance deadline set for 31 October 2025.
