United Kingdom: Office of Communications opened consultation on designating Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri as radio selection services

Description

Office of Communications opened consultation on designating Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri as radio selection services

On 16 October 2025, the Office of Communications (Ofcom) opened a consultation on its proposed designation of Radio Selection Services (RSS) in the United Kingdom until 11 December 2025. Ofcom recommended that Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri be designated under the Media Act 2024 to provide United Kingdom's radio streams through voice commands. The recommendation applies to RSS providers serving over 700,000 UK users listening to internet radio. Designated services must enable users to select and play radio through voice, ensure uninterrupted playback, and comply with radio providers' technical requests without charging fees. It was highlighted that smart speakers account for 97% of current voice-activated radio listening, though smartphone and in-car usage also occur.
