United States of America: Introduced Iowa Consumer Data Protection Bill (HSB 674)

On 8 February 2022, the Iowa consumer data protection bill was introduced to the State Assembly. The bill concerns consumer data, specifically data stored by firms that have at least 10,000 customers. The bill would introduce mechanisms that would aid the customer in requesting the deletion of personal data, opting out of divulging personal data in the first place, as well as accessing or obtaining a copy of their personal data. Additionally, the bill outlines stricter data processing standards that the firms should follow. This includes limiting the amount of personal data that is collected in the first place, introducing stricter data protection measures, and most importantly, not processing or collecting data without the user's consent. The bill does not include a private right of action.
