Australia: Association of Information Access Commissioners of Australia and New Zealand adopted communiqué on access to environmental information in digital age

On 3 October 2025, the Association of Information Access Commissioners (AIAC) of Australia and New Zealand adopted a communiqué, urging public sector leaders to champion access to government-held information, particularly environmental data, as a driver of innovation, sustainability, and public participation. It calls for a presumption in favour of disclosure, requiring agencies to justify refusals, and encourages the use of digital platforms and tools to facilitate access. Endorsed by all Australian states and territories and New Zealand, the recommendations aim to strengthen transparency, support data-driven solutions, and promote an open government culture.
