Description

National Institute of Standards and Technology closes consultation on proposed zero draft of standard on documentation of AI datasets and models

On 17 October 2025, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) closes the public consultation on the extended outline for the proposed zero draft of a standard on documentation of artificial intelligence (AI) datasets and AI models under its AI Standards Zero Drafts pilot project. The draft applies to AI developers, providers, and organisations using datasets and models, aiming to harmonise documentation practices across the AI lifecycle. It proposes templates for dataset and model documentation to balance detail and flexibility, incorporating testing, evaluation, verification, and validation (TEVV) descriptors, alongside guidance on public-facing documentation processes and outcomes. The standard seeks to improve transparency, comparability, and trustworthiness in AI while remaining domain-agnostic and adaptable to different audiences and use cases.
