Northern District Court of California's jury returned verdict against Google awarding USD 425 million in damages over privacy violations in application-based data tracking

On 3 September 2025, the federal jury in the District Court for the Northern District of California returned a verdict against Google, awarding USD 425 million in damages in a class action lawsuit over privacy violations. The jury found that Google collected user data from individuals who had disabled tracking settings. The case, originally filed in July 2020, alleged that Google unlawfully intercepted and collected mobile application usage data even when consumers had turned off “Web & App Activity” tracking. The plaintiffs argued that the setting was intended to control Google’s data collection from searches, location services, and partner sites displaying advertisements. The jury found Google liable on two claims, the invasion of privacy and intrusion upon seclusion.
