On 1 September 2025, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and Arts published the report on the age assurance technology trial evaluating online child protection technologies. The trial assessed 48 providers across six categories of age verification systems applying to digital platforms and content providers. The findings showed age assurance can be implemented effectively in Australia without major technological barriers, though no single solution fits all contexts. Systems demonstrated robust privacy practices and performed consistently across demographic groups, however, some providers are unnecessarily retaining data, anticipating future regulatory needs. The report provides technical feasibility evidence for policymakers but makes no implementation recommendations.
