United States of America: House Oversight and Government Reform Committee announced investigation into Wikipedia’s practices to address conduct that allegedly injects bias or undermines a neutral point of view on its platform

On 27 August 2025, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee announced the launch of an investigation into Wikipedia. The investigation aims to examine alleged organised efforts to inject bias into Wikipedia entries, specifically focusing on foreign operations and individuals at academic institutions receiving taxpayer funding who may be influencing United States public opinion. The Committee sent a request for information to the Wikimedia Foundation CEO, seeking documents and communications from 1 January 2023 to the present. This request includes records on possible coordination by nation-state actors and academic institutions in editing activities, details of the Wikipedia Arbitration Committee's actions against editors, identifying characteristics of accounts involved in prohibited behaviour, Wikipedia's editorial policies and protocols for ensuring neutrality, and any analysis of manipulation or bias related to antisemitism and conflicts with the State of Israel. The requested information is due by 10 September 2025, to assist the Committee’s oversight regarding how Wikipedia addresses threats and ensures accountability for misconduct.
