Description

Tennessee Attorney General and 43 State Attorneys General sent letters to AI companies on policies implemented to protect children from sexually inappropriate conversations

On 25 August 2025, 44 State Attorneys General, led by Tennessee Attorney General, issued letters to artificial intelligence (AI) companies, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, xAI, Anthropic, Character Technologies, Perplexity AI, Apple, Chai AI, Luka, Nomi AI and Replika. The communication referred to reports of AI chatbots engaging in sexualised conversations with children and allegedly encouraging harmful behaviour in teenagers, including suicide and murder. The Attorneys General cited internal Meta documents showing that its AI Assistants were authorised to flirt and engage in romantic roleplay with children as young as eight. The letter called on AI developers to introduce safeguards against the sexualisation of children in their policies and noted that oversight bodies would take enforcement actions if the products cause harm to children.
