Description

Personal Information Protection Commission and Korea Internet and Security Agency closed inquiry into protection of personal information of children and adolescents

On 29 July 2025, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) and the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) provided an update on the development of the Policy Recommendations for the Protection of Personal Information of Children and Adolescents in the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Region, which has been underway since March 2025. As part of this initiative, the PIPC conducted a survey and literature review in June, targeting 21 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Forum, to assess current policy approaches and levels of public awareness. The PIPC focused on several areas, including parental or legal guardian consent, child- and adolescent-friendly personal information disclosures, age verification mechanisms, support for the rights of children and adolescents (including the right to be forgotten), protection from personalised advertising and online sexual exploitation, and the design of age-appropriate safeguards. The PIPC plans to publish policy recommendations by the end of 2025, outlining best practices for personal information authorities across the region to enhance the protection of children’s data.
