On 23 July 2025, the Smart Cities and Communities Bill was introduced to the House of Representatives. The Bill aims to accelerate the deployment of smart technologies. It establishes an Interagency Council on Smart Cities, chaired jointly by the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Secretary of Commerce and drawing on officials from Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, the National Science Foundation, and other agencies, to coordinate federal support. The Bill provides up to USD 100 million a year from 2026 to 2030 for Technology Demonstration Grants in urban, small town, rural and Tribal settings and allocates a further USD 100 million annually to a TechHire Workforce Training and Development Programme, which will award competitive grants to prepare workers for smart city roles. It also mandates a Cybersecurity Working Group to develop evaluation tools for technology security, Department of Energy technical assistance, a smart city voucher scheme granting access to National Laboratory expertise and a comprehensive resource guide for local authorities.
