France: General Directorate of National Gendarmerie opened investigation into X over suspected use of algorithm for foreign interference

On 9 July 2025, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office referred a case to the General Directorate of the National Gendarmerie for investigation into alleged foreign interference involving the algorithm of X (formerly Twitter). The referral follows reports from a Member of Parliament and a senior public official, supported by findings from French researchers and various public institutions. The investigation focuses on both the platform as a legal entity and individuals, focusing on organised tampering with and fraudulent extraction of data from an automated data processing system.
