On 25 June 2025, Canada's Department of Global Affairs opened a consultation on the development of a Digital Trade Agreement (DTA) with the European Union until 23 August 2025. The consultation aims to inform exploratory discussions on digital trade rules, complement existing agreements such as the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), and align with evolving technological developments. A Canada-EU DTA could support inclusive trade, promote digital economy objectives, and enhance cooperation on issues such as data transfers, cybersecurity, AI standards, privacy, and misinformation. The consultation aims to gather information on data governance, digital authentication, online consumer protection, interoperability standards, and digital inclusion.
