On 10 July 2025, the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI) opened a consultation on data protection-compliant handling of personal data in large language models (LLMs), until 10 August 2025. The consultation applies to stakeholders in science, industry, and civil society. It seeks insights on issues including anonymisation limits, memorisation of personal data, risks of data extraction, and enforcement of General Data Protection Regulation data subject rights in Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. The findings will support the development of compliant approaches to managing memorised data in AI.
