Data Protection Commission issued ruling in investigation into Multichoice over data protection violations

On 6 July 2025, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) fined Multichoice Nigeria NGN 766,242,500 for violating the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act). The ruling applies to Multichoice Nigeria, an entertainment and broadcasting provider that processes personal data of subscribers and others. NDPC’s investigation, launched in the second quarter of 2024, found that Multichoice engaged in intrusive and disproportionate data processing and carried out illegal cross-border transfers of Nigerians’ personal data. Multichoice’s remedial actions were deemed unsatisfactory, prompting the fine and a directive for further investigation of all Multichoice data collection outlets for compliance.
