Description

Office of the Australian Information Commissioner announced launch of AUD 50 million payment program as part of Meta’s settlement agreement reached in Cambridge Analytica case

On 26 June 2025, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) announced that Meta Platforms opened registrations for a AUD 50 million payment program established under the enforceable undertaking accepted by the Australian Information Commissioner on 17 December 2024. The payment scheme provides redress to eligible Australian Facebook users affected by the Cambridge Analytica matter, specifically those whose personal information was disclosed via the “This is Your Digital Life” app between 2 November 2013 and 17 December 2015. The scheme is administered by an independent third party and is structured to provide two tiers of compensation, a base payment for individuals who experienced generalised concern or embarrassment, and a higher-tier payment for those who can demonstrate specific loss or damage. The OAIC is not responsible for administering the scheme. The enforceable undertaking followed civil penalty proceedings commenced in March 2020 and a mediation process initiated in February 2024 and also included a contribution from Meta toward the Commissioner’s legal costs. Any unclaimed funds from the scheme will be paid into the Commonwealth’s Consolidated Revenue Fund.
