On 30 June 2025, the United States District Court, District of New Jersey, denied Apple's motion to dismiss the Amended Complaint in Civil Action No. 24-cv-4055 (JXN)(LDW). The lawsuit, filed by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and Attorneys General of twenty States, alleges that Apple engaged in anticompetitive practices and violated federal and state antitrust laws. Specifically, the plaintiffs allege monopolisation and attempted monopolisation of the performance smartphone market and the smartphone market in the United States. The plaintiffs contend that Apple's alleged restrictions on cross-platform technologies impact five categories, including super apps, cloud-streaming apps, text messaging, smartwatches, and digital wallets. The allegations include limiting super apps via App Store Guidelines, constraining cloud-streaming apps with standalone submission requirements, preventing third-party text messaging integration of SMS with over-the-top protocols, degrading third-party smartwatch functionality through control of application programming interfaces, and precluding third-party access to near-field communication hardware for digital wallets.
