On 3 June 2025, the Bill on Information Protection (Bill no. 2894-D-2025) was introduced to the Argentine Chamber of Deputies. The Bill establishes the right of individuals, without discrimination, to protect their honour and receive accurate information, aiming to support informed public opinion while balancing freedom of expression and press. Media outlets are expected to promote pluralism by presenting diverse perspectives on events. The Bill introduces an “information protection action,” allowing individuals to request judicial correction if they believe their privacy, honour, or rights are affected by offensive or inaccurate information. The action can be submitted in writing without legal representation, identifying the contested information, its source, and a proposed correction. Jurisdiction is determined by the medium’s or claimant’s domicile, and proceedings are exempt from fees. Courts are required to act promptly, giving the medium a short period to respond and issuing a ruling within five days. If granted, corrections must match the original publication in prominence and technical quality, with non-compliance resulting in daily fines or alternative publication at the defendant’s expense. Costs are generally borne by the defendant.
